Tuesday 22nd May
The sidetracking is over as we get back to Route
66. However we are backtracking east
today as we had to fly past Winslow, the Meteor Crater, Two Guns
and Twin Arrows on our trip from Holbrook to Page.
First stop is the remains of Twin Arrows, a great photo op. Once a Valentine diner (the red and white ones that we have seen repeatedly throughout this trip) with the two arrows embedded in the ground.
A brief stop at the remains of Two Guns, once a tourist town
on the edge of Canyon Diablo. This town
was once home to two roadside zoos, but now it is owned privately and has a For
Sale sign out front.
Luckily we arrived just prior to the documentary film starting
which saved a little time as we were then able to head straight out with a
guide for a one hour tour around the rim of the crater. The crater is 550 feet deep, 4,000 feet
across and 2.4 miles in circumference.
One piece of information we were given by the guide today really made me
laugh. There are lizards abounding. He said ‘don’t watch the lizard - watch out for
what is chasing it’.
Nasa astranouts continue to train in this crater.
Moving on to Winslow, I have been really looking forward to Standing
on The Corner in Winslow Arizona and finally here we are. A bronze statue in front of the neat
mural. We took photos and of course
after all this time – my photo was disgusting so I deleted it. Very disappointed. However we have the corner and all is ok.
It was difficult finding a place to have lunch – nothing memorable
there at all. So back to Flagstaff to
have a rest and do some laundry. Off to
dinner at the Big Foot BBQ – found in a basement in a shopping mall. Really good ribs and enough for lunch
tomorrow.
A drive around Flagstaff and we found numerous wonderful neons but of course I didn’t have my camera. Flagstaff is a really neat town especially the historic district.

Tonight Nev is trying to turn 60 pounds of luggage into 50
pounds. Hmmm no more shopping.
