On The Road - Day 10 - Tucumcari to Santa Fe

Tuesday 15th May

Santa Fe here we come.  A few last minute photos of the Tucumcari murals and off we go.

Beautiful mesas around us as we approach Newkirk and Cuervo.  This road is ROUGH.  Interstate 40 had chopped Cuervo in two .  There is a beautiful old stone chapel and abandoned buildings below the Cuervo Mesa.

Wooden Water Tower

Approaching Santa Rosa we are on a straight flat road but the GPS show altitude is now 4776 feet.  We are driving I-40 due to recent advice that 66 has been washed out in places.  The Blue Hole ouside Santa Rosa is a 61 foot sink hole with clear blue water used for swimming and diving.

Now driving on US 84 which overlays a lot of the old 66 and we are climbing steadily 5330 feet and leveled out.

A side trip to San Jose to see the old church and the old truss bridge.

And look what we found - hundreds of swallows nests on the ceiling of an underpass.  The birds were going crazy and when we enlarged the photo we could little babies in the nests....  aaaaaahhh.

Through Glorietta Pass and now at 7500 feet the highest point of Route 66.  Our ears starting to hurt!  Large Civil War conflict here.

A quick detour into the Pecos National Park for a quick look.

Arrive Santa Fe and find our accommodation for two nights – R&R we need it, we are really tired.  Washing to be done and just slow down for a while.  I WILL CATCH UP ON THIS BLOG.

Its gorgeous here – love it, want to stay for a week.  But…. No wifi in our room – oh no will I never catch up.  There is no doubt we need an early night so shutdown early.  Will work on this blog in the morning.

Night!
